Amelie & Maple

“Maple has just fitted perfectly into our lives.”

12-year-old Amelie adores her new companion dog and best friend, Maple – and so does the rest of her family.

“Maple has been such an amazing support to Amelie, especially in times when she’s sad, frustrated or emotionally dis-regulated,” says her mum, Arian. “Maple has a beautiful, soft way of calming you down and just being with you. She is very affectionate and docile, which suits Amelie and our family very well.”

Amelie has cerebral palsy and uses an electric wheelchair to get around, which can be challenging for many companion dogs. But not Maple.

“Her excellent training means that she can walk well next to the wheelchair,” says Arian. “She can help Amelie open doors and cupboards and take her socks off – which Amelie and Maple think is the best game ever! It’s amazing having a companion dog that was hand-picked to suit our needs.”

The family had boarded a few different dogs from Mobility Dogs but found that some were not a good fit – such as a high-energy dog that often knocked Amelie over when she was sitting or crawling on the floor.

Maple has just fitted perfectly into our lives,” says Arian. “She’s been a great emotional support for Amelie when she’s sick or not feeling great. She’s also a good ‘icebreaker’ when we’re out and about. Kids can sometimes feel awkward about the wheelchair, but they’ll stop and talk to Amelie because Maple is there. Then they realise that Amelie is just like them, but in a wheelchair. It’s been lovely for her.”

“We couldn’t do without her,” Arian reflects. “We knew that she was right for us, and she and Amelie have this amazing bond. She just knows when you’re upset or having a hard time – she comes and snuggles into you. We’re hoping she’ll be her companion for years to come.”

“We feel incredibly lucky to have Maple in our family and we’re so very grateful for Wilson Home Trust for giving us the opportunity to purchase this gorgeous dog. Thank you!”
