Talking to children about disability while building and maintaining good self esteem.

Parenting a child with a disability has unique challenges and there can be a lot to think about. This lecture will talk about some of the issues that can arise when talking to your child about their disability. Siblings of a child with a disability can also face additional challenges, which parents have to navigate their way through. We will also discuss some strategies for managing family relationships when one child requires a different parenting approach to accommodate their disability. Finally, many parents want to know how to encourage healthy self esteem in their children, the lecture will cover some practical tips for encouraging self esteem in all children including those with disabilities.

Presenter: Rebecca Slykerman is a Neuropsychologist for children.

Come along at 7pm for supper. The lecture will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately one hour. Please phone Sally 488 4688 ext 5828 or email: sally@wilsonhometrust.org.nz.

Walking on Water 2008 is an extraordinary two day sailing event planned the 5th and 6th of July to be held at the Gulf Harbour Boat Ramp and Yacht Club. It will give the opportunity of a sailing experience and a chance to learn the basics of sailing to the people of the Hibiscus Coast regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

Sailability Auckland and Yachting New Zealand are teaming up to produce a sailing experience event like none other. Sailing boats will be available and accessible for anyone to have a go! Even for people with severe disabilities there are motorized servos for steering and controlling the boat and sails to make sailing possible. This is an event for everyone.

Saturday 5th July is the day to go along and have a go at sailing and ‘learn the ropes’ followed by Sunday which is a small fun regatta for those that have just learnt the basics.

The weekend will culminate in prize giving and happy hour at the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club to celebrate the spirit of the weekend: ‘To make a difference through experiencing sailing in the ocean with others’.

Organisers are looking for participants, volunteers with a sailing background and sponsors.
