Carer’s Strategy Workshop 2007

An opportunity for all of you who parent or care for a child with a disability.
The Government has announced a new Carer’s Strategy Initiative. Come along and make your experiences and concerns mean something. Both sessions will take the form of a lively workshop from which a submission will be made to this signifcant strategy.
Some issues already raised include, improving support and information for carers, difficulties for carers in the workforce and respite options, etc.
A five year action plan will support the long term implementation of the strategy.
Carer’s NZ will be holding 8 forums around NZ but we thought the issues that families with young children have are in many ways unique and we’d like you to have this opportunity to contribute with others with similar issues.

Clowning workshop Ursula Gabriele

May 25, 2007
9:00 am

Ursula Gabriele is a trained psychologist and teacher for drama-in-education, studying body language and mime in Germany, Austria and England over the past 20 years. For many years, Ursula Gabriele was a student of Didier Danthois, the French mime clown who founded the ‘Fool at Heart’ School for Sacred Clowning in London. Her training with Didier included street improvisations, workshops for school performance and a specific training for performing in health care (hospitals and retirement homes).

Ursula Gabriele facilitates PlayFoolSpirit Clowning workshops in New Zealand for adults, secondary schools, mental health clients and corporate clients. She performs as a PlayFoolSpirit Clown at festivals, functions and in health care.

The PlayFoolSpirit Clown in health care is a sensitive clown. She uses her clowning skills, including dance, mime, singing, playing musical instruments etc (but no language) to bring joy to a day which is very often characterized by boredom, isolation, illness and pain. A PlayFoolSpirit clowning session in health care is not a clown show, it is an improvised play, focused on meeting people individually. They are invited to engage into the improvised play, but they don’t have to participate if they don’t wish. They can simply watch.

The PlayFoolSpirit Clown is not intrusive. When she makes contact with someone, she is aware and respectful of the person’s state. It is the clown’s joy and intent to meet people, but she makes contact with them from a place of compassion, acknowledging their reality. She doesn’t try to make things better or to take away their misery. She is just there, sharing a moment of being, sharing a moment of contact and of play. The PlayFoolSpirit Clown is not a therapeutic clown, but there might be a comforting effect for people, when a smile is brought into their face or when a cord in their heart is struck.

Gabriele will be in Auckland on the 25th of May and has offered her time to meet and spend some ‘clowning’ moments with children at the Wilson Centre. If you are interested, contact Franky Lewis (09-428 0190 – f.lewis@paradise.net.nz) or Adrienne Barkle (09-489 9134 – ext 5876) to arrange a suitable time.
